The story behind the Siesta

The Siesta cocktail is a relatively modern creation that emerged during the craft cocktail renaissance of the late 20th century. It was invented by a renowned mixologist, Katie Stipe, in 2006 at the Flatiron Lounge in New York City. The cocktail quickly gained popularity and has since become a beloved drink among cocktail enthusiasts.

Katie Stipe's inspiration for the Siesta cocktail came from her love for tequila and her desire to create a refreshing and well-balanced cocktail that highlights the flavors of Mexico. The name "Siesta" is a nod to the leisurely midday break commonly observed in many Latin American countries, particularly Mexico.

While the exact story behind the creation of the Siesta cocktail may vary, the consensus is that Katie Stipe crafted the recipe as a twist on the classic Hemingway Daiquiri. The Hemingway Daiquiri, also known as the Papa Doble, was a favorite drink of the renowned writer Ernest Hemingway during his time in Cuba. Stipe's goal was to incorporate tequila and grapefruit flavors while incorporating her unique touch.

The Siesta cocktail typically consists of reposado tequila, which is aged in oak barrels for a short period, along with fresh lime juice, grapefruit juice, and a touch of simple syrup for sweetness. A key ingredient that sets the Siesta apart is the addition of a bitter aperitif, like Campari. This adds a subtle bitterness and complexity to the cocktail, creating a unique flavor profile.

Since its creation, the Siesta cocktail has gained popularity both within the bartending community and among cocktail enthusiasts worldwide. Its vibrant citrus notes, balanced sweetness, and hint of bitterness make it a refreshing and sophisticated choice for those seeking a modern twist on tequila-based cocktails. The Siesta has become a staple in many cocktail bars and has earned its place as a beloved and iconic drink in the ever-evolving world of mixology.
