There are few things in life that offer the same crisp, refreshing flavors of a well-made mojito. First originating in Havana in the 1500s, the mojito is a rum cocktail made with soda water, fresh mint, and plenty of lime. Understandably, this particular drink pairs perfectly with white sand beaches, plenty of sunshine, and a quiet breeze blowing in the background.

While it’s a delicious drink, the natural sweetness can certainly lead to faster intoxication and an even worse hangover, especially when drunk during the daytime or out and about in warm sunny weather.

Fortunately, we have the perfect solution, a mocktail that you can drink from sunup to sundown: our Virgin Mojito! In this article, we’ll discuss what a virgin mojito is, how to make a virgin mojito, and why people might choose to consume one in the first place. We’ll even help you set the mood with the best places and occasions to try a virgin mojito recipe!

How to make a Virgin Mojito?

Bright, herbaceous and refreshing, the mojito is one of the world’s most popular cocktails. This non-alcoholic version features our award-winning Rum Alternative to deliver all the goodness of the original, minus the hangover. And with a hint of natural sweetness, you won’t need any added sugar. It’s the perfect all-day cocktail for your beach body!

2 oz. Ritual Rum Alternative
4 oz. soda water
1/2 oz. simple syrup
Fresh mint
2-3 limes

Add fresh mint and squeeze limes into a highball glass. Muddle enough to release mint essence without pulverizing the leaves. Add Rum Alternative, simple syrup, and crushed ice. Stir with a bar spoon to incorporate. Add more ice and top with soda.

What is a Virgin Mojito?

A virgin mojito (or mocktail mojito) is a classic mojito made of non-alcoholic rum. Non-alcoholic mojitos offer a lot of the same refreshing flavor profiles, but without any actual alcohol (saving you calories, a hangover, and a bad night’s sleep). Alcohol-free mojitos can be enjoyed any time day or night without the need to worry about getting a buzz or intoxicated. Making your mojito virgin with a spirit replacement like Ritual Zero Proof’s Rum Alternative can provide a delicious alternative to the boozy original. Ritual Zero Proof makes all of our non alcoholic spirits with select premium botanical ingredients designed to mimic the smell, flavor, and alcohol “bite,” as regular spirits but with absolutely zero alcohol, and close to zero calories.

Why would one want to use a mojito mocktail recipe?

There are plenty of outstanding reasons why one would choose to drink a mojito mocktail. For starters, it’s a significantly healthier option. Alcohol generally speaking has a few major negative impacts on your body. It naturally dehydrates your body, which can lead to a number of issues, but alcohol also notoriously ruins the quality of sleep you experience after drinking. A poor night’s sleep can affect every part of your day, from your productivity at work to the quality of your workout. You’re also less likely to eat junk food you’d normally ignore if you were sober.

Furthermore, it’s safer - after all, it’s impossible to drive drunk if you never became intoxicated in the first place. Regardless of whether you’re mixing in a virgin mojito among other alcoholic drinks, or choosing to stay sober altogether, reduced quantities of alcohol will almost certainly result in you making better decisions than you might otherwise.

There are also quite a few personal reasons one might choose not to indulge in alcohol. Many people have moral, religious, or ethical reasons for choosing not to drink. For those who would prefer to stay completely sober, our mojito mocktail recipe can be a great way to stay social and enjoy the vibrant flavors of a classic cocktail, without violating any personal or religious obligations.

Of course, as mentioned, one can enjoy our mojito recipe mocktail among, or in addition to, regular mojitos. If you find that you’ve had quite a bit to drink, a virgin mojito can be an excellent way to stay social without drinking too much. Alternatively, you can enjoy a virgin-ish mojito by mixing 1 ounce of regular rum with an ounce of our Ritual Rum Alternative to make a weaker cocktail. While you’ll still be consuming alcohol, the reduced quantities can still make for a better tomorrow.

Best situations to try a virgin mojito

There’s a time and place for everything, including when and where to enjoy an alcohol-free mojito. Here’s a few places that would pair perfectly with our mojito mocktail recipe:

  • At the beach: surf, sun, and sand can create a perfect backdrop for this Caribbean classic. Sink your feet into the sand and recline your chair back as you enjoy this sweet sip of serenity.
  • Backyard summer BBQ: When it’s still 90 outside even after the sun goes down, it’s time for something to beat the heat. Serve this mocktail mojito recipe over ice at your next neighborhood get-together and you’ll be the talk of the town - in a good way!
  • In the dead of winter: When it’s January 34th and there’s no sign of summer to be found, a mojito mocktail can be exactly what the doctor ordered to raise your spirits and remind you that it won’t always be so cold and gloomy outside. Invite some friends over, mix up some mocktail mojitos, and put on a favorite summertime film. Sip back, relax, and let the flavors wash over you.

No matter the reason or occasion, a virgin mojito can enable you to enjoy all your favorite warm-weather flavors without worrying about the massive hangover that can come with a few of these sweet mocktails. Grab these ingredients and some of our Rum Alternative and get mixing!
